If you are a student studying and living away
from home then you will not only have to contend with all the problems
associated with students such as financial problems and exam stress, but
you will also have to contend with finding suitable housing. Knowing what
your options are when it comes to finding student accommodation and knowing
your rights can make life that little bit easier.
Where you choose to live during your time at college or university can
have a big impact on your time there and the main problem the student
will have to face is the struggle with costs and facing and dealing with
landlords for the first time.
The student will have to manage costs, sharing bills and paying them and
running a home successfully, here are some helpful tips to ensure you
get the most out of your college experience.
Check out the area
It is easy to become overwhelmed if this is the first time you have been
away from home, if the area is new to you then take time to check the
area out a little and become orientated. The student-housing officer at
your college will be able to give you advice about the district and they
will offer information such as local libraries for studying, wi-fi spots,
and the cheapest places to get a good meal and where students hang out.
Halls and university accommodation
Halls are a popular choice among students, it is an excellent way for
students to meet other students and is convenient for day-to-day needs,
most colleges offer halls of residence and some have self-contained flats
for those students who want to live in, benefits of halls are:
* It saves you having to go house hunting
* Its easier to make new friends and settle in
* Bills are often included in the room rates which makes it cheaper and
better value than most private accommodation
Finding private accommodation
Usually in the second year at college or university, most students choose
to move into private accommodation usually with friends they have made
during their first year as roommates. Most housing suitable for students
will have between three and six bedrooms so if you are thinking of sharing
you will have to take this into account.
Another option open to students are bed-sits and flats of your own or
living as a lodger in accommodation. With a huge variety of accommodation
on offer, prices will vary greatly from area to area with the accommodation
nearer to campus often being more costly than those which are further
away.
A letting agency
A letting agency is there to help you find suitable accommodation and
while they don't charge for searching for accommodation for you, they
will charge if you accept any accommodation they found. If you choose
to go with a letting agency then make sure it an accredited one or one,
that is registered with an association of letting agencies.
